UNIPORT VC Meet NANS, Set Up New SUG Electoral Committee After Dem Dissolve Student Union Executives
Management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) don set up one new Students’ Union Government (SUG) Electoral Committee (ELECO) after dem dissolve the former SUG executives over crisis wey surround the students’ union election process.
According to the Vice-Chancellor’s Media Aide, Godwin Ajah, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Princewill Chike, take the decision after serious disagreement break out between the dissolved SUG executives, the union Chief Judge and the Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) over how to constitute the electoral committee wey suppose begin work on Friday, July 17.
Ajah explain say the misunderstanding stop the election process, forcing the university management to step in, dissolve the executives and appoint a fresh electoral committee to make sure say the transition go smooth and students get free and credible SUG election.
The VC’s aide also allege say the dissolved SUG executives involve themselves in the mismanagement and diversion of union funds, adding say the allegation na one of the major reasons wey make the university authorities take the action.
The latest development come after a meeting between the university management and representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), where both sides discuss the leadership crisis rocking the students’ union and the way forward for the election process.
Students and stakeholders now dey wait to see when the newly constituted electoral committee go release timetable for fresh SUG elections and restore normal activities to the students’ union.
