South-East Deaf Women Don Call for Legal Recognition of Nigerian Sign Language

Deaf women for South-East don raise their voice — through sign language — as dem call on government to officially recognise Nigerian Sign Language.

The women, under the South-East Deaf Women Association, say say lack of official recognition dey make things harder for Deaf people when e come to education, healthcare, employment and even accessing government services.

According to reports from local news outfits, the association also want government to make sign language available for schools and provide qualified sign-language interpreters for hospitals, government offices and other public institutions.

Dem also dey call for scholarships and better learning materials for Deaf students, while pushing for more opportunities for qualified Deaf women to occupy leadership positions.

For the women, the matter no be just about language. Na about equal rights, proper inclusion and making sure say Deaf people no dey left behind simply because dem communicate differently.

Their message clear: if government really want everybody to belong, then Nigerian Sign Language must get the recognition e deserve.
