Court Grants Senator Natasha Akpoti Bail on Self-Recognition

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, bail on self-recognition following her arraignment on a six-count charge related to alleged cybercrime.

Akpoti-Uduaghan pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stem from claims she made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello. The Federal Government accused her of spreading false information intended to incite unrest, citing statements she made both privately and during a Channels TV appearance, where she alleged plans to eliminate her were discussed.

Prosecutors claim her remarks violate Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrimes Act, which prohibits the intentional dissemination of false information to damage reputations or provoke public disorder.

Her legal team, led by Professor Roland Otaru (SAN), argued for bail on self-recognition, highlighting her status as a senator and senior legal practitioner. With no opposition from the prosecution, Justice Mohammed Umar granted the bail request and adjourned the case to September 22 for trial.
