WHO Urges U.S. to Reconsider Withdrawal

January 21, 2025

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed regret over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the global health body and has urged the U.S. to reconsider. In a statement on Tuesday, WHO emphasized its vital role in protecting global health, including that of Americans, and underscored its work in addressing diseases, strengthening health systems, and responding to health emergencies.

The announcement follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday, directing the U.S. to pause funding and support to WHO and to find alternative partners for activities previously undertaken by the organization. Trump criticized WHO, accusing it of being overly influenced by China during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This marks the second attempt by the U.S. to leave WHO, with the first occurring during Trump’s first term before being reversed by President Joe Biden. WHO, which was founded in 1948 with U.S. participation, highlighted the significant contributions the U.S. has made in global health efforts, such as the eradication of smallpox and nearly eradicating polio.

WHO concluded by expressing hope that the U.S. would reconsider its decision and reaffirm its commitment to global health collaboration.
