English Premier League clubs don vote on Thursday to continue with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for the upcoming season, even though controversy and criticism still dey.
The decision come from the Premier League’s annual general meeting, where 19 out of the 20 clubs vote to keep the technology. According to the BBC, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) na the only club wey vote against the system, after dem call for the vote to scrap VAR last month.
VAR, wey dem introduce in 2019, na to help referees avoid clear and obvious errors wey fit affect match results. But the technology don cause many wahala, especially for the recently concluded 2023/24 season. Managers and fans don always vex about VAR, dey talk say the decisions no dey consistent and e dey spoil the flow of the game.
Even with these issues, the Premier League acknowledge say dem need to improve the system after the vote. “While VAR produces more accurate decision making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters,” the league talk for their statement.
