Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said he is willing to leave the club if it helps fund a rebuild following their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
United lost 1-0 to Spurs in Bilbao on Wednesday night, with Brennan Johnson scoring the decisive goal. The defeat marked another low in a dismal season, with the club languishing in 16th place in the Premier League and facing their worst finish since 1974.
Fernandes, 30, acknowledged the club’s financial challenges and potential need for a squad overhaul, stating:
“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is.”
Despite being United’s standout performer this season, Fernandes admitted the loss was devastating:
“It’s a very sad day… We could have been in the history of the Europa League, but it’s not like that. Football is cruel.”
His comments come after under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim also offered to walk away from the job without compensation if the club no longer wants him. Amorim has managed just six league wins since taking over in November.
Still, Fernandes defended his compatriot, saying the players believe Amorim remains the right man to lead the team:
“He has done a lot of good things… We all agree that he’s the right man.”
Fernandes joined United in 2020 and has since become a central figure at the club. His future, however, may now hinge on the club’s direction and financial strategy in the wake of another trophyless season.
