EPL Confirms 13 VAR Errors, Plans Offside Tech Rollout

February 5, 2025

The Premier League has recorded 13 Video Assistant Referee (VAR) errors in the first 23 match rounds this season, a decrease from 20 mistakes at the same stage last year. According to a report by BBC on Tuesday, these include four incorrect VAR interventions and nine missed interventions, as identified by the Key Match Incidents panel.

In response, the league has introduced a six-point plan aimed at improving VAR’s accuracy, speed, and transparency. A key component is the potential introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) before the season ends. Chief Football Officer Tony Scholes expressed optimism, stating, “The progress made over the last four to six weeks has been significant.”

The proposed SAOT system, already in use in FIFA and UEFA competitions, is expected to cut the time required for offside checks by 31 seconds without compromising accuracy. While initially planned for implementation last year, its rollout depends on achieving full confidence in the technology. Scholes acknowledged that if SAOT is not ready by the final match rounds, it may be postponed until next season.

To enhance fan experience, referees may begin announcing VAR decisions in stadiums from next season, aligning with practices seen in other major football competitions. Scholes admitted VAR communication with fans needs improvement, adding, “None of us here at the league believe it’s good enough.”

Despite progress, the Premier League remains cautious about implementation timelines. Meanwhile, it has outlined four key VAR errors this season, including controversial decisions in matches involving Bournemouth, West Ham, Brentford, and Nottingham Forest.

The league’s six-point plan also includes improving VAR training, increasing transparency through real-time messaging for broadcasters, and refining education efforts for fans. The initiative underscores the Premier League’s commitment to enhancing officiating standards while maintaining the integrity of the game.
