Pan Niger Delta Forum leader and prominent Nigerian nationalist, Edwin Clark, passed away on Monday at the age of 97. His death was announced on Tuesday morning by a family representative, Prof. C. C. Clark.
Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Clark was a lawyer, politician, and staunch advocate for the Niger Delta’s rights and development. His political career began in 1953 as a councillor in Bomadi, and he later served as Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region, Commissioner for Finance in Bendel State, and Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon in 1975.
A vocal proponent of resource control and environmental protection, Clark was a key figure in the Pan Niger Delta Forum and the Ijaw National Congress. He also played a significant role in establishing the University of Benin and later founded Edwin Clark University.
Clark remained a respected elder statesman until his passing on February 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy, education, and political influence.
