Justice Peter Lifu of di Federal High Court for Abuja don stop di Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) again from releasing di voters’ register to Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for di local government election wey dem plan to hold on October 5, 2024.
For him judgement wey he give on Monday, Justice Lifu support di All Progressives Congress (APC) wey challenge di election date wey RSIEC set. He criticize RSIEC say dem no follow di correct law wey dey guide local election, and say di electoral body no give di required 90-day notice before dem fix di election date.
Di judge tok say di voters’ register suppose don update before dem fit set correct election date. As e be so, he order say make INEC no release di certified voters’ register to RSIEC until dem follow all di legal requirements.
Justice Lifu still stop RSIEC from using any voters’ register wey come from INEC for di election and he also block di Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Department of State Services (DSS) from providing security for di election.
He tok say, “Di updating and revision of di voters’ register suppose don complete before dem fit set legally valid election date.”
Dis judgement follow di previous order wey di judge give on July 19, where him stop INEC from releasing di voters’ register and tell all di parties to maintain status quo until dem settle di main case.
